Morena. The 4 cases reported between yesterday and this morning all live in Kaitaia and include 2 household members of an existing case, a close contact of a Whangarei case (that lives in Kaitaia), and another community contact of a Kaitaia case.

AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND MOVES TO RED TRAFFIC LIGHT SETTING AT 11.59 TONIGHT - SUNDAY 23RD JANUARY 2022:
Kia ora koutou,
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has confirmed New Zealand will move to the red traffic light setting at midnight tonight.
Nine COVID-19 cases in Motueka are confirmed to have the Omicron variant, which has prompted the decision. Omicron is now circulating in Auckland and possibly the Nelson area, if not further.

20/01/2022: NORTHLAND MOVES TO ORANGE ON THE TRAFFIC LIGHT SYSTEM

Northland is moving to Orange from 11.59pm tonight. The rest of New Zealand remains at Orange.

Vaccination rates have continued to increase in Northland, reaching 89% first dose and 86% second dose, while the easing of the Auckland boundary over summer has also not driven an increase in cases in the Northland region.

UPDATE 10AM Sunday 16 January:
The national advisory for strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore has been extended to include the west coast of the South Island.
This morning we have also received reports of surge activity on Northland's west coast so continue to advise people to stay away from beaches and shorelines on both of Northland's coasts.

15/01/2022: NATIONAL ADVISORY: TSUNAMI ACTIVITY – EXPECT STRONG AND UNUSUAL CURRENTS AND UNPREDICTABLE SURGES AT THE SHORE

We expect New Zealand coastal areas on the north and east coast of the North Island and the Chatham Islands to experience strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore following a large volcanic eruption at Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'pai in Tonga.

Strong currents and surges can injure and drown people. There is a danger to swimmers, surfers, people fishing, small boats and anyone in or near the water close to shore.

There are two new cases to report in the Kaikohe area today. They are from the same household and are in isolation. Investigations are underway to determine how they are linked to the current outbreak. There is a pop up COVID-19 testing and vaccination clinic in the main street of Kaikohe Sunday 16 January - 10am until 2pm.
