Fisheries

The 100% owned Ngāti Kahu company, Ngāti Kahu Fisheries Limited holds the important role of guardian over the commercial fisheries settlement quota that was transferred as a property right to Ngāti Kahu under the Māori Fisheries Act 2004.

As commercial fisheries quota owners, NKFL leases the annual catch entitlements to commercial fisheries companies within the sector. The measure that guides this leasing process is based on whanaungatanga, kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga. Companies that are awarded the annual lease are a range of Ngāti Kahu owned businesses, businesses that hire Ngāti Kahu Whānau and Moana NZ who Ngāti Kahu holds a shareholding in and receives shareholder dividends from.
