Muriwhenua Iwi Māori Workforce Teaching Support Scholarships 2026

Te Rūnanga-a-Iwi o Ngāti Kahu is pleased to offer scholarships to support the development of Muriwhenua Kaiako.

Supporting them to thrive in teacher training, and encouraging them to return to serve their people, so that Muriwhenua schools and kura are enriched by teachers who carry te reo, tikanga, and mātauranga into every classroom.

These scholarships are funded through the Iwi Workforce Development initiative from the Ministry of Education.

3x Degree Pathway Scholarships worth $11,000 each*

5x Entry Pathway Scholarships worth $4,000 each*

Applications open: 3 July – 3 August

Before Applying:

– Read the information and criteria section on this webpage.

– Download the Muriwhenua Whakapapa Form (This needs to be downloaded, completed and ready to be uploaded)

– Have a Kaumatua from your marae endorse the whakapapa form.

– Have a copy of your proof of Iwi registration.

– Have a copy of your proof of enrollement.

– Have a copy of your most recent academic transcript.

– Have an image of your student ID.

– Have a copy of your CV.

– A referee

We reccomend preparing your responses to the following questions, eah response must not exeed 150 words: 

1. How do you see your teaching contributing to the aspirations of your iwi, hapū, whānau and wider community? (Max 150 words)

2. What are your long-term aspirations as a kaiako in Muriwhenua? (Max 150 words)

3. What barriers or challenges do you face in your study journey, and how would this scholarship help you to overcome them? (Max 150 words)

      Who can apply

      • Applicants must live within the Te Hiku o Te Ika region 
      • Applicants must be a registered member of a Muriwhenua iwi or hapū Applicants must be either:  
        • Degree Pathway: Currently enrolled in a Degree Pathway (Bachelors, Masters, PhD) and currently teaching at a Muriwhenua Kura, or ITE Pathway:
        • Currently enrolled in an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programme or entry-level education pathway (e.g. Teacher Aide at a Muriwhenua Kura). 
      • Applicants Must have actively participated in marae activities within the past 12 months.  

      If successful, recipients will receive: 

      • One-on-one mentoring sessions with a qualified Kaiako from the Advisory Group, held across school terms throughout the scholarship year. 
      • A Group Wānanga facilitated by Ngāti Kahu Kaiako from across Aotearoa.  
      • Access to Ngāti Kahu te reo Māori classes.
