Waiharara fire update - January 3.
Fire and Emergency urges people around Kaimaumau to stay away from firefighting equipment, including the dams in place around the village. We need the dams as a source of water for helicopters to fight the fire. They are not safe to swim in, and the water in them may not be clean. Today, fire crews concentrated their efforts on the area north of Kaimaumau Village and on the western part of the fire ground. Fire and Emergency Incident Controller John Sutton says five helicopters and three dozers and diggers supported the 44 firefighters today, working across the 2400ha fire.
